Day 64 - Boston

For the last year or so my take on running has varied between it "being a pain in the butt, still got to do it" all the way up to "hey this is kind of fun, but now I'm tired."  It goes back and forth for me but usually falls between those extremes.  For some of my friends though running is their thing.  It's what they love to do, and they work hard to do it well.

For those friends the Boston Marathon is a goal and a dream.  Everyone agrees that there is simply no other race in the world quite like it.  Earning the qualifications to run the race is something that they spend years doing, and even more time working to maintain.  Today someone didn't just attack the race, they attacked all of the people who have spent so much of their lives getting into a position just to run this one race.  Some of the participants may have planned to never run another marathon.  For others this was their latest race, but also the biggest.  Now, whenever they look back on this magnificent accomplishment they will also have to look back on the tragedy of the day.

My friends who were running, and those who were just there to cheer the runners on, all escaped without injury.  Too many other people didn't.  I can only hope that those who have been injured are able to recover.  I wish I had a pithy comment that sums up my feelings on this whole thing, but I haven't figured out what they are yet.

Food today:  egg and cheese (300 calories), turkey sandwich (500 calories), snacks were a small bag of chips (200 calories) at lunch and a piece of toast with peanut butter (200 calories) before exercise, dinner was penne, sauce and a slice of garlic toast (700 calories).  Exercise was a lunchtime walk (100 calories), a 5 mile run (750 calories), and a kickboxing class (500 calories).
