Day 61 - Differing Endurance

Ask me to run 10 miles and I'll do it with no major problems (though perhaps a tiny bit of whining).  Ask me to spend 15 minutes punching something and I want to collapse.  It's obvious, of course, that different kinds of exercise require different kinds of endurance but it's shocking to see how different that really is.  I've started to define myself as a runner, which makes sense now that I consider training for a half-marathon an activity to do on a weekend instead of a once-in-a-lifetime event.  I really don't worry about running for a couple hours as long as I've trained myself up to that point.

However running alone really does leave a wide array of other exercises completely untrained.  I've got very little upper-body strength, and I'm not really that flexible.  Obviously that's why I'm cross-training.  My friend even pointed out today that some of the soreness I feel is partially related to my need to do more strength training as my muscles haven't worked this hard running before.  It can feel disheartening to be good at one exercise, and miserable at another but that's not a reason to give up.  Six months ago I still wasn't good at kickboxing but I was reasonable.  I will get better as long as I keep at it, so I just have to not quit.

Food today:  english muffin with peanut butter (300 calories), turkey sandwich (500 calories), snacks were a couple tootsie rolls and a piece of toast with peanut butter before exercise (300 calories), dinner was a cheeseburger on light toast (700 calories).  Exercise was a lunch time walk (100 calories), a 5 mile run (800 calories), and a kickboxing class (500 calories).
