Day 57 - Portion Control

Today was a rest day from exercise.  On the other hand I decided to do a little experiment with some portion control today.  My normal pasta meal is two cups of whole-wheat penne, a cup of sauce, and two slices of garlic toast.  That adds up to approximately 1000 calories worth of food.  It's not an unhealthy amount exactly but it is a very crowded plateful.  Today I decided to cut that total down a bit, going to a cup and a half of penne, 2/3rds of a cup of sauce and one slice of garlic toast.  It was noticeably smaller as a total quantity of food, but still a satisfying dinner.  More importantly that slight difference translates to approximately 300 calories (based on the serving sizes reported on the boxes).

I'm not good at portion control.  If it's food I like and it's in front of me then I will eat it.  Getting better at deciding the precise amount of what I cook could be a key to reaching my stretch goal weight (180 pounds).  Other meals I make don't translate to lower portion sizes as nicely, but as the week progresses I'm going to try cutting back those meals a bit as well.  We'll see how it works.

Food today:  toast with the last of the peanut butter (300 calories), a roast beef sandwich for lunch (500 calories), snacks were actually deli samples at the supermarket (200 calories), dinner was the smaller penne, sauce and garlic toast (700 calories).
