I've almost certainly commented on this sort of thing before, but today was a prime example so it comes up again. Back in my days as a lazy slug an unscheduled day would likely have been spent watching TV, playing video games and/or going out to someplace unhealthy for a meal. Today started off a little like that, sleeping late, but once I was up I was bouncing around looking for something to do, and before long I was grabbing the bike and going for a ride. Perhaps most importantly, looking for something to do translated into an exercise-centric activity. In the past even if I was feeling like I had to go out, that still would have meant a trip to the movies, or a bookstore or other low-activity options.
Sleeping late at least had the benefit of reducing the temptation to go back to 5 Guys or order pizza or something (since "breakfast" occurred at lunch-time). Even so the biggest change in my life has been the fact that I consider exercise as an activity to do. Running was out for the day, as I wanted today to at least partially serve as recovery from yesterday's run. A 16 mile bike ride ended up as a compromise with myself, because I really kind of wanted to go run. A bike ride is reasonable cross-training for running, and didn't put the kind of pressure on my legs that running would have.
I'm still not certain I actually like exercise, but it does seem to have become a habit. In the end that's probably the most important characteristic.
For anyone interested, here's today's bike ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/298075415
Food today: egg and cheese for "breakfast" (300 calories), snacks included some peanut butter and a slice of cheese (200 calories), dinner was the reduced portion penne, sauce and garlic toast (700 calories). Exercise was the bike ride (800 calories, but this is kind of a guess the online estimates are all over the place for cycling).
